I have cut back on my grilling outside with charcoal. now, i heard that not eating meat, like big macs and double cheese burgers with extra bacon, helps reduce the carbon on the earth.

Why do we talk of going carbon NEUTRAL when we need to DECREASE the level of GHG in the atmosphere?

Steve M. asked:

Surely we should be going carbon negative, or carbon neutral-plus-plus/and-then-some. What about our personal historic footprints pre-offsets, i.e. from the moment of our birth? And what about our ancestors since the industrial age who are no longer around - should we be assuming their responsibility too?

If you plant a tree every five days can you become carbon neutral?

NFrancis asked:

I ask this because this site says you can click a button every day and every five clicks pays for a tree to be planted. Only 1 click per day per computer. The sponsors pay for the trees.

Do you think this really works? I think it makes sense.

Do you think it is an effective counteractive measure against carbon emissions? Or more of an ineffective action to make it seem like action is being taken?

Do you think there is a more effective alternative?

Cows - Carbon Neutral or Scourge of “Global Warming”?

Dr Jello Doctor of Science asked:

So many time we’re told that Cows are bad for the environment, but are they?

We’re told that Bio-Fuels are needed to prevent so-called “Global Warming” because we burn food, not oil which is carbon sequestered underground. Bio-Fuels are just a part of the carbon cycle where plants take co2 from the air to grow, and by converting this carbon to fuel the carbon stays neutral when cars burn this fuel creating co2 that is dispersed into the air.

Since Cows are neither alchemists nor breeder reactors, they too take carbon from plant life and convert the carbon in plants to gases which are re-converted to plants. Nothing is added to the carbon cycle.

Since Cows are carbon neutral, are the attack on these docile creatures an attack on Capitalism, specifically an attack on McDonald’s?

Me, I don’t heat my residence. Oregon, but winters are mild temperatures, though lots of rain. People refer to the area as the “Banana Belt.” Benefits, I am very healthy and haven’t had a cold or flu since high school. I’m 60. Hmmmm, I wonder if that might be part of the cause I live alone?

The Institute for Sustainable Communication is seeking suggestions for the most accurate and practical way in which the carbon footprint of banner ads and web pages can be calculated.

For each variable in the formula please define terms, list assumptions and identify sources.

californiainfidel asked:

I’ve spent the last three days reading the literature on “carbon footprints”. It all seems convoluted, vague, and contradictory. The carbon footprint calculators seem to be very subjective. I am beginning to think that the concept is more politics than science. How does a carbon footprint factor in natural processes that apparently account for over 99% of greenhouse gases?
