Assuming being carbon neutral is possible, and that we can offset our carbon output with the creation of carbon neutralizing activities, then why can’t we simply maintain our present level of carbon output, and create relatively more carbon offsetting activities in order to become carbon NEGATIVE? In other words, if X number of carbon offsets neutralizes X number of carbon outputs, shouldn’t X+1 carbon offsets DECREASE the carbon in the atmosphere?

You can adopt many green E friendly energy practices but if you still are releasing copious amounts of methane gas over your lifetime into our atmosphere you will never truly be “carbon neutral”. It’s just an inconvenient truth. Will Al Gore be demanding a flatulence tax next?
Richard: it sounds like you have been inhaling your own farts again with that response.

If you have a high carbon footprint, is there anything you could do to offset it?

Tom D asked:

Terminology: “carbon footprint” means the amount of carbon dioxide you put into our atmosphere.

Some people need to travel a lot, thus they emit a lot more carbon dioxide.

Is there any way you can offset your emissions by, for example,
* investing in reforestation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reforestation
* paying for carbon sequestration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_sequestration

If it were possible, would you ever consider paying or investing to make yourself carbon neutral? Do you think anyone would?
